Park Lake Ice Fishing 2019 FW Club students had a great time ice fishing on Park Lake! Students learned ice fishing methods and how to set up tip-ups.
Stocking of the Red Cedar River The Michigan DNR stocked 3000 steelhead into the Red Cedar River on campus spring 2013. Some members of the FW Club attended and were able to participate by dumping in buckets of fish. It was a great experience!
Park Lake Ice Fishing Derby
The MSU FW Club volunteers each year at the Annual Park Lake Ice Fishing Derby. This event happens out on Park Lake in Bath Twp. The Derby has anywhere from 80 to 150 participants, including youth and adults. With the support of the Friends of Park Lake and Dr. Hayes, we volunteer at this event and help out by taking measurements of the fish. By keeping data sheets of the fish caught, we can help out with determining who wins the prizes. We also take this as an opportunity to gain fisheries skills, practicing sampling, and taking scales for later research.
Field Trips to Local Fish Hatcheries
Another great opportunity for our members to learn about fisheries biology and management is by visiting local fish hatcheries, and DNR educational offices/visitor centers. By making field trips such as these, we have the opportunities to learn more about fisheries as a field, meet and network with professionals in the field, and get more experience all around.
American Fisheries Society Annual Michigan Meeting
We are an active student sub-unit of the American Fisheries Society, and participate in the Annual MI AFS Meeting each year. This is a great opportunity to hear about all of the research that is currently going on in the fisheries field, as well as network with fisheries students from other schools, faculty, and professionals in the fisheries field.
